Wig Caps – Wear A Wig Cap Under Your Lace Front Wigs & Lace Wigs
Wig Caps – Wear A Wig Cap Under Your Lace Front Wigs & Lace Wigs
Wig caps are essential when wearing wigs.
Many people wonder why they are so essential when you decide to wear a wig and they are easy to buy as the shop you purchase the wig fro will sell them or you may receive one free of charge with your purchase of either a synthetic wig or human hair wig.
They are also easy to use.
You can just shove all of your hair under the wig cap but this can leave bumps and lumps so that when you put your wig on it is sitting a little higher on the head than would look natural.
You may have lots of hair and it’s recommended that you french braid your hair into 3 – 4 sections. You would then need the pin the braids into the space left between each braid. When the wig cap is on you will see that it looks smooth allowing the wig to sit on your head and look undetectable.
If the wig you are wearing is extremely long then you may be able to pin the braids at the back of the head. You will need to decide which option looks and feels the most comfortable.
Some people have curled their hair then secured the curled hair to the head using hair pins in the formation of an X then secured it all with the wig cap. This method is time consuming and the hair pins can rip your wig cap.
If you have thicker hair or afro hair then you can cornrow your hair, which is similar to French braids, and will also give flatness and smoothness under your wig cap.
Wig caps come in many colours including, blonde, brown, black and nude.
One the most important reasons to wear a wig cap is so that it creates friction between your skin and the wig itself.
Whether you have hair under the wig or not the wig cap stops the wig from moving when you perspire.
What is an Instant Weave?
A Wig or Headscarf – Which do you prefer?
At Afuro Hair and Beauty we believe that you should give something back to your local community and that is why I volunteer for a few hours a week at the North Staffordshire University Hospital.
This week I was on the Cancer Department and was talking to an absolutely lovely lady, who is slightly bonkers and is probably why we got on so well, called Frances Hibbert. Frances was having Chemotherapy and we were talking about random things. Honest our conversation was as random as you can get. Anyhow, we got onto the topic of wigs and Frances says “Oh no, I’d never wear one of those things!”.
So in between giggles as I’m new to interviewing, we embark on some light hearted questioning:
Mary: So Frances, we were talking about wigs and your personal thoughts about wigs. .
Frances: I don’t particular like them. I think they look like hats or mops on top of heads.
Mary: So wigs aren’t for you?
Frances: Personally wigs are not for me. I’d prefer to wear a hat or a bandanna.
Mary: Why do you feel more comfortable in a hat or bandanna than a wig?
Frances: To me a wig seems big, bulky and heavy.
Mary: Did you try these wigs through the NHS and privately?
Frances: Both
Mary: Human or Synthetic Hair?
Frances: Both. I do object that I would have had to pay for any wig I purchased, which was what I was advised when I firsthad Chemotherapy.
Mary: Where do purchase the bandanna’s from?
Frances: From any local shop. I went to Ascot last year and I wore a long head scarf and a hat with a band around it.
Mary: So you felt good…
Frances: Well I wouldn’t have said that I felt good. I felt better than if I’d gone with a bald head or a wig on.
Mary: I bet you looked really cool as that sounds very stylish and that’s what Ascots all about, style.
I found this conversation very insightful as I’d always wondered why some women wear head scarves as opposed to wigs. When I told Frances that my hair was a wig, she was very impressed. She was also very impressed that my natural hair, al afro or ‘fro as I call it, could fit under the wig, as I did show her a photo of myself without the wig on.Even seeing how good a wig can look, Francis prefers to do without them.
Head scarf’s have always been a fashion item that celebs have been wearing for some time now. Paris Hilton is a prime example, then there’s Halle Berry and you can’t miss out Posh Spice, sorry Victoria Beckham..
I wear wig because I choose to, which is completely different from wearing a wig because you have to. Therefore a wig in the eyes of some people is something that they will never try as it represents something that they do not like.
It’s down to preferences. Some people like Marmite and some don’t…
I would like to thanks Frances for taking a few minutes to talk to me and to have given me an sight to the other side of the coin about wigs… I also wish her well with her treatment and I’m looking forward to hearing from her in the near future!
Tv Soap Star wigs out
The one question that people ask me is “Are you bald to have to wear a wig?”. The reason I wear a wig is that I’m lazy but like to look good.
When I mention that Beyonce wears a wig, people are shocked. In this day and age loads of people wear wigs for a multitude of reasons and mine is just one.
Slapping the myth “You have to be bald or less than healthy to wear wig” is Kara Tointion. She seems to have gone through s phase of wearing wigs even though her natural hair is gorgeous. I’m going to guess that she has the same outlook on life and wants to look great but is sometimes, well all the time for me, too lazy to be bothered with doing anything with your hair. Since wearing a wig my hair has grown loads and when I wear it al naturel, which isn’t often, even my Mum thinks it’s a wig. When I told her it was my real hair, she couldn’t believe that my hair had grown so long and looked so healthy.
Plus Kara Tointon is of a similar age to myself (cough, splutter….) goes to show that anyone, of any age can indulge themselves in a new look. She looks great in her wigs and there are some great synthetic wigs, around today, which are really hard to tell from Human Hair Wigs.

Real Hair or Synthetic hair. Which one would you choose?
This is a bit of a tricky one as synthetic and human hair both have different benefits.
I wear both types of wigs but probably wear the human hair ones more often, however, the human hair wigs do take a more effort in styling and straightening. With synthetic wigs you can literally put on and go as they retain curls and styles a lot better than human hair. When I’ve given presentations about Afuro Hair and Beauty and what we sell I always have samples so that people can see and feel products from our website. People cannot tell the difference between the human hair wigs and the synthetic wigs. Technology has come on leaps and bounds with synthetic fibres. You can even heat some synthetic fibres up to 180 degrees, there is normally a tag to advise you that you can do this.
The clincher for some people is price and synthetic wigs are really cost effective when compared to human hair wigs. However, human hair wigs will last longer than synthetic wigs. Synthetic wigs can last up to 12 weeks with continuous wear and maintained with the appropriate synthetic hair care products.
Difference Between a Real Hair & Synthetic Wigs
When shopping for a wig or hairpiece you have a lot of options- what style, what colour, what design and so on. However, the biggest decision you will need to make is whether to purchase a human hair wig or one made with synthetic hair. In order to decide you need to really understand the difference between human hair wigs and those made with synthetic hair.
What is the Difference Between a Human Hair Wig and a Synthetic Hair Wig?
As the names point out a human hair wig is made with actual hair from other people. Synthetic hair wigs are crafted from man-made fibres. However, the differences go farther than just the materials used to make the wigs. Read more…

How would you cut your wig?
I was at a networking event this morning, yes this MORNING at 6.45am! Nuts or genius…..I’ll have to let you know.
Anyhow, after explaining what Afuro Hair and Beauty does, I had many numerous compliments on how lovely my hair looked. Hahaha I just LOVE wearing wigs. Just so that you can also oohh and aahh over my hair I’ve attached a photo below. I’ve also attached a photo of myself wearing the wig before it was cut.
I was explaining that the wig is 18″ long throughout so the fringe was also 18″ and I just went into a hairdressers, Francesco’s in Newcastle under Lyme Staffs, and had the lovely Matt cut it for me. All I said was “I want a fringe but keep the rest of the hair the same” and viola! I have this gorgeous cut.
The rule that I live by when having a wig cut,is that the hairdresser starts off by cutting off a little then working there way up as the hair isn’t going to grow back any time soon.
I have to say that since having my hair cut I have been attracting more attention, especially from the male of the species but I’m not complaining!
Just in case your wondering this is the Sleek 100% Human Hair Lace Front Wig – Diva in colour 1B.33 available from www.afuro.co.uk
I was also asked if I was wearing the wig when it was cut. I realised from that questions that people may take there wig, unattached to your head, to the hairdresser and have it cut.
An important point I’d like to raise is that when you have a wig or hair extension cut, you MUST ensure that the wig or hair extensions are re-fitted in the correct place it was cut in. I’ve made a boo boo with putting this wig back on in the exact same position as it was cut in. I’ve come to realise that I should make sure that the wig is on straight before it is cut……I’m only human…Oh well you live and learn and live to tell the story!
I personally I think it’s best to be wearing the wig when it cuts so that it can be shaped to your face. If you take the wig in and it’s cut on a stand then how can it be cut to compliment your face? That could be the reason why some wigs are slightly obvious looking than others.
What do you think? What would or do you do? Have you taken your wig in and had it cut? Was it a good cut?
Where can you buy Wigs?
As I’m a big fan of wigs I thought that I’d give you the heads up on where you can go to buy them….

What are Monofilament Wigs?
I wondered about that as well when I started to delve into the world of wigs…
What are Monofilament Wigs?
If you have looked at websites that sell wigs, you have probably seen that some of them offer monofilament wigs. This type of wig usually costs a lot and is considered to be the most comfortable and desirable. But what makes it so? Learn what a monofilament wig is, and if it would benefit you to get one.
Most wigs on the market are machine-made and have fabric caps. In contrast, a monofilament wig cap is made from a special material which is very thin, mostly transparent and pleasing to the touch. In a monofilament wig, each hair strand is hand knotted to the cap, which lets it turn more freely.
Usually monofilament wigs are made from real human hair. A monofilament cap takes time to make, so there is no point in making top quality wigs from synthetic materials. Besides, synthetic fibres are not as durable as natural human hairMost modern wigs marked monofilament wig are actually only partially monofilament. Usually the most important part of the wig, the top, is monofilament, while the back has a more traditional construction. This reduces the cost of the wig and makes it easy to adjust with tape tabs. These ensure that your wig fits snugly on your head and will not slide..Read more…
Do you have to be bald to wear a wig?
No you don’t.
I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count how many times I’ve been asked that question. It’s even funnier when I say that I have a full head of hair but I’m just a bit lazy when it comes to doing something with it. People don’t seem to believe me until I whip out of photo of myself, which I sadly have on my phone. As my hair is natural, aka afro, it seems to shock and confuse people and all they say is ” You fit all of that under a wig?!”
One day I’ll post a photo of myself without the wig…..
I wear a wig as I like to look good but don’t want to be spending what precious time I have doing my hair. However some people wear wig as they MUST to due to one reason or another. I really hope that this blog gives people both views of the coin and to show how much wigs have come on since the 1800′s!
Talking of people who MUST wear a wig, Naomi Campbell is definitely one such person who needs to speak to me. With the amount of money that she earns I really would have thought that her hair piece, whether it’s a weave or a wig, would be attached correctly. At the very least it would cover up her stressed out scalp.
I can’t say for certain why she has a receding hairline like that, this can happen when you constantly put pressure on your hair with hair extensions. This is why Wigs especially Front and Lace Wigs are good, when attached correctly, as they are attached to your skin and not your hair.
She could have Hair Transplant surgery. Yes…Hair transplant surgery I can’t believe that this is available. I thought it was just something that was on the Simpsons for fun, Homer had it done, and not a REAL form of surgery. As you can probably tell this is not something that I would ever endorse and think that there are less painful ways of having a full head of hair. Then again if I couldn’t wear wigs any more I’d go natural. Hair Transplant Surgery is just too extreme.
How to attach a Lace Front/Full Lace Wig: PT1
For me it’s been trial and error when it’s come to getting the application of these wig correct. I am nothing if not a perfectionist. So I’ve been through the fires of trying new types of double sided tape. I was very wary about using liquid adhesive however it’s good to use if you use it correctly.
The glue will damage your hairline if you apply it directly to your hair and hairline. How do I know? In my never ending quest for perfection I decided to pay a “professional” to attach my first ever Full Lace Wig.
Now remember I had been putting on my Lace Front Wig myself for several months to this. Now there are a few pointers I want you guys to know so that when you’re hunting for a “Professional” to also attach your Lace Wig you know what to look for.
- The “Professional should be wearing a Lace Wig or at least have good photo’s of themselves wearing a Lace Wig. When you book your appointment ASK!! If they are good they will have no problem with this and plus as they want the business they should accommodate you in this. I know I would…
- When you see them with the Lace Wig on/photo’s see if it looks natural. If not then I’d go elsewhere as this shows that they haven’t got a clue on how to attach the wig correctly. This could mean that they do as poor a job on your hair as they did on their own.
- See if they have photo’s of past clients as well. They usually will and then at least you have an over few of their work.
By doing the above you will probably avoid the mistake that I made.
The “Professional” who attached my Lace Wig had also attached her Lace Wig and as she hadn’t applied the liquid adhesive correctly it looks as if she was in a constant sweat. With the liquid adhesive you apply it in thin layers that you leave to go tacky before applying the next layer. When you paint the glue on in one go it turns a misty colour which, when wearing a Lace Wig, especially Swiss, is very very noticeable. The aim of the game is to make this wig look natural..
She had also used the method of spreading the glue onto your hair. Remember this glue can be super strong and can last up to 6 weeks. When you come to take the wig off you will find that getting the glue, and when it’s thick it’s more difficult to get off, will come off with bits of your hair.
Another technique used was that if you left a bit of glue forward of the lace you would plaster the baby hair to it. Having the glue there reflects the light so once again you look like a sweaty betty. The glue doesn’t hold the baby hair there for long anyhow, plus it’s really messy and gets in the hair, as you see from the photo’s below.
As you can see from the above images the shiny areas on her face is where the liquid adhesive has gone tacky. That is where the baby hair would be pushed onto, with a comb. I understand why this technique is used but I have never used it as I like my lace wig to look as natural as possible. As you can see below.
People think that you need to go to a special hairdresser to get your hair cut. I went to Francesca’s in Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire and had the lovely Matt cut my hair. Matt had never cut a wig before and I am really pleased with the results. The first photo was taken on the day it was cut as I was going to a charity ball that night. The second photo is at Christmas and I had bed hair.
Why? Why is it that when you go to the hairdressers you look stunning then spend hours trying to achieve the same look… Oh it may be because I’m not a hairdresser and that’s what they train so many years for.
One thing you must get and I can’t live without is……GHD’s. If your going to get a wig of any sort get some of those and you can’t go wrong.
The difference between a Lace Front Wig and a Full Lace Wig
I’ve been doing a bit of research on the net to see what information is available regarding Full Lace Wigs, or as they seem to be also called, Full Lace Front Wigs.
As the name suggest the base of this wig is completely made of lace. The lace can either be Swiss Lace, which is thin and delicate and due to this it is almost undetectable. French Lace is thicker but is more durable.
If you’ve never worn a Lace Front Wig, then I would suggest that you start off with one that is made from French Lace. I started off wearing the Sleek Diva Lace Front wig, which is made from French Lace, and even though I made mistakes when attaching the wig the lace was strong enough to take my pulling on it when I realized I hadn’t aligned the double sided tape or liquid adhesive correctly to the wig.
The above picture is of the base of a Lace Wig. The material sown into/around the lace, is the stretch of the cap. Why is it there I hear you say. Well imagine if the whole wig was lace you wouldn’t be able to put it into a ponytail without ripping. However the stretch part of the cap does what it says. It stretches so that the lace base can be more flexible.
Now to put this all into some type of perspective, a Lace Wig is the type of wig that Beyonce, Tyra and other celebs wear. This is the type of wig that I’m wearing in the photo at the top of the page.
Hair loss due to Chemotherapy
I think that one of the most recognised and understood reasons for losing hair is through Chemotherapy. Not all Chemotherapy leads to hair loss as a friend had chemo and did not lose his hair.
If you do lose your hair it is just another event to deal with along with the illness that made it necessary for the Chemo to take place in the first place. Having had friends who have gone through Chemotherapy the one thing that I think people forget is that your hair does grown back so losing your hair can be a temporary set back.
Kylie Minogue also went through Chemotherapy, where she suffered from hair loss, but her hair did grow back and I personally think she looks fantastic!
Kylie Minogue has breast cancer.
Singer Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer, leading her to postpone an Australian tour and cancel a Glastonbury headline appearance.
“Whilst at home in Melbourne with her family this week, Kylie was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer,” her tour company Frontier Touring said.
“Hopefully all will work out fine and I’ll be back with you all again soon,” the singer said in a statement.
Minogue, 36, has had a total of 37 hit singles in the UK.
Immediate treatment
She had been due to begin the 20-date Australian leg of her current worldwide Showgirl tour in Sydney on Thursday.
The tour company added: “She will undergo immediate treatment and consequently her Australian tour will not be able to proceed as planned.” Read more…
Kylie’s battle not over yet
Kylie Minogue says she still has a mountain to climb in her battle with cancer.
Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue says she is far from fully recovered from her breast cancer ordeal.
The 38-year-old singer says she is lacking strength and stamina, but her fight against the disease has made her more understanding of the struggle some sufferers have to go through.
Minogue was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer while preparing for the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour in May 2005. She underwent surgery in Melbourne and further treatment in Europe, which ended in December.
“I feel that I was saved,” she said in excerpts from an interview to be broadcast on Britain’s Sky One television on Sunday, and published in British newspapers today. Read more..
Celebs who may suffer from Alopecia
Alopecia what you need to know..
Troubled TV presenter Gail Porter has lost almost all her trademark blonde hair as a result of the condition alopecia areata. Gail, who has said she is ‘bald but not afraid’, said last week that she lost most of her hair overnight while she was in Los Angeles a month ago.
Here, we call on the experts to explain a condition that affects around one in 100 people in the UK, but is still poorly understood:
What is alopecia?
Alopecia, which causes baldness, is thought to be an auto-immune disorder, with the immune system -the body’s defence system – turning on itself.
Celebrities Women Who Wear Wigs – Is it for fashion or hair loss ?
I stumbled across something online today that said that Tina Turner actually suffers with alopecia universalis. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, as many African American women wear wigs and hair weaves. Most often I think it is for style, but who knows this could be why I have never actually have seen a picture of her without her wig. She always looks so fabulous, the wigs just add to her beauty. Why you should avoid stress.
We all have those times when we feel that the world is caving in on us and everyday feels like a year. It would seem that continuous stress on the body can lead to hair loss..
Hair loss due to emotional stress
One of the reasons for the recent hair loss problem may be due to stress and they mostly are related. Hair loss really a side effect of too much and intensive bodily or emotional Stress. When people are going through a worrying event or period, they may start to notice that their hair starts to thin and eventually hair loss can take place. In such circumstances, the hair follicles often stop growing too early when the body system wrongly treats the hair follicles as foreign tissues, thus resulting in thinning of hair and ultimately dropping out. Reason 9 for hair loss…
Having an infection is another cause of hair loss.
One type of infection is ringworms that infects the scalp. This unsightly and uncomfortable reason for hair loss is a form of scalp infection. However ringworm, despite the name, is a skin infection and has nothing to do with worms. It’s caused by fungus, a bit like athletes foot. This type of infection mainly effects children and can be transeferd by way of contact with animals (eg dogs, cats. hamsters etc).
As it’s a fungal infection this can be treated with anti fungul medication to clear it up.
What are the symptoms of scalp ringworm?
- Commonly, the infection just looks like severe dandruff on various places on the scalp. This may be mistaken for psoriasis.
- Some infections cause patches of hair loss (bald patches) to develop. The bald patches are usually inflamed and very scaly. Small broken-off hairs may remain scattered in the bald patches.
- In some cases several painful pustules (boils) develop on the scalp.
- A more severe infection develops in a small number of cases. This causes a large ‘boggy’ swelling in a section of the scalp, called a kerion. This can be oozing and tender and, if not treated early, can cause permanent scarring and hair loss.
- If you have a severe infection, such as a kerion or pustules, you may develop a fever and the glands in the neck may swell. Read more about this….
Honest to betsy I didn’t know you could get an infection which could cause hair loss. I can’t wait for the 8th reason…..
Why do people suffer from hair loss?
Thinking about having my hair cut really short or close to the scalp made me start to think about women and men who don’t have that option.
Losing your hair is something that can really knock your confidence. When people don’t understand why or know why it is not something that you’re going to enlighten them on. So wigs aren’t just a fashion statement but for some a real necessary…
Over the next few days….OK 10, I’ll be going through the main reasons that people suffer from hair loss.
Reason 10
In most cases the hormone DHT damages hair follicle which causes hair loss.
This is naturally present in men and those who go bald do so because of both the hormone and their genes. In women, hormonal fluctuations could lead to lower than normal estrogen levels. Estrogen is supposed to balance and regulate DHT. With less estrogen, DHT has a stronger effect.
DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone (Die-hi-dro-tes-tos-ter-ron) an active metabolite and also a by product of the male sex hormone Testosterone. Metabolites are compounds that are crucial for normal growth, physical development and reproduction. Read more..
Starlets going baldly where no one else has gone before!?
I’ve considered and am still considering cutting my hair really short.
This is something that I’ve been considering doing for a long time as my cousin cuts hers hair short on a regular basis and it works for her. Personally I think really really short hair would be great as I wouldn’t need to do anything except wash and dry it.
Plus as I wear nothing but a wig if it didn’t suit me then no one would be the wiser as my head always has a wig on it.
