Pregnancy and hair loss

I’ve reached that stage in my life where every time I see a baby I go a little crazy and start to speak in a weird baby language which makes no sense to the baby.

Due to this weird and strange thing, I think it’s called being broody, I’ve met alot mums who have explained to me how there hair started to thin after having a baby. To be honest I think it’s one of the most common side effects I’ve been told about when a women has had a baby. Another side effect I’ve heard of is called..Forever skint and slightly stressed…Lol! Unfortunately this hasn’t rid me of my broodiness…

Hair Growth Changes During Pregnancy

When a woman becomes pregnant her body begins to undergo some very significant hormonal changes. One of the changes, an increase in estrogen production, can affect the natural hair growth cycle. Increased levels of estrogens during pregnancy cause some hair follicles to shift into the anagen (growth) phase of the cycle so an above average number of follicles are producing hair during this time. The increased estrogens will also inhibit some follicles that are in the catagen (shedding) phase so less hair is lost during this time.

Because of these changes to the hair growth cycle many pregnant women report experiencing a boost in hair thickness, hair volume, hair length, and general hair feel. However, this exciting period of hair growth is short-lived as the positive changes are replaced with somewhat negative ones after childbirth. Read more…

Thyroid disease and hair loss.

Starting to lose your hair can be worrying enough on its own, but sometimes it’s a sign of other health problems. Hair which thins evenly across the head, especially if it is accompanied by unexplained tiredness, weight changes and thinning of the outer edges of the eyebrows, can be a sign of thyroid problems. If you suspect this may be happening to you, your doctor can help – but what do you need to know to look after your hair?

How Thyroid Problems Cause Hair Loss

The easiest way to understand what your thyroid does is to see it as a sort of regulator controlling the pace of your metabolism. Sometimes the thyroid can stop working as hard as it should, or it can become overactive, either of which can cause problems. This can be triggered by other health conditions or it can happen spontaneously. It can happen at any age.

Because hair follicles normally work very hard and require a lot of energy, they can quickly start to suffer if your body doesn’t have enough energy because your metabolism has slowed down. The hormonal changes that occur when the thyroid is overactive can also cause problems. Often people find that their hair becomes dry and rough, or that it clumps together more and tangles easily. The good news is that it almost never falls out completely and changes are usually reversible. Read more..

Diets and Hair loss!

This has really made me be or at least think more carefully about what I eat. As I’ve mentioned before I have thinning hair at my temples and have wondered when it would start to thicken out again as I haven’t had my hair braided in over 2 years.

Now I’m going to watch what I eat as I do tend to stuff my face with chocolates and crisips. Which is has increased since I quit smoking…

As we are learning there are many reasons people start losing hair and these can range from stress to heredity to illnesses. One factor that many people don’t even realise can affect hair health is diet.

There are a variety of vitamins and minerals that should be included in your daily diet in order to reduce the loss of hair. When your diet is lacking in proper nutrition, or when you make drastic changes to your current diet, hair loss can result.

Extreme Diets

While simply not having enough of a certain vitamin in your diet can certainly contribute to hair loss, extreme dieting is the number one cause of diet related hair loss. Diets that are considered extreme are typically those that are also known as “fad diets.” This includes any drastic change in the way a person eats in order to achieve nearly instant results.
