Hair loss due to Chemotherapy

I think that one of the most recognised and understood reasons for losing hair is through Chemotherapy. Not all Chemotherapy leads to hair loss as a friend had chemo and did not lose his hair.

If you do lose your hair it is just another event to deal with along with the illness that made it necessary for the Chemo to take place in the first place. Having had friends who have gone through Chemotherapy the one thing that I think people forget is that your hair does grown back so losing your hair can be a temporary set back.

Kylie Minogue also went through Chemotherapy, where she suffered from hair loss, but her hair did grow back and I personally think she looks fantastic!

Kylie Minogue has breast cancer.

Singer Kylie Minogue has been diagnosed with breast cancer, leading her to postpone an Australian tour and cancel a Glastonbury headline appearance.

“Whilst at home in Melbourne with her family this week, Kylie was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer,” her tour company Frontier Touring said.

“Hopefully all will work out fine and I’ll be back with you all again soon,” the singer said in a statement.

Minogue, 36, has had a total of 37 hit singles in the UK.

Immediate treatment

She had been due to begin the 20-date Australian leg of her current worldwide Showgirl tour in Sydney on Thursday.

The tour company added: “She will undergo immediate treatment and consequently her Australian tour will not be able to proceed as planned.” Read more…

Kylie’s battle not over yet

Kylie Minogue says she still has a mountain to climb in her battle with cancer.

Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue says she is far from fully recovered from her breast cancer ordeal.

The 38-year-old singer says she is lacking strength and stamina, but her fight against the disease has made her more understanding of the struggle some sufferers have to go through.

Minogue was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer while preparing for the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour in May 2005. She underwent surgery in Melbourne and further treatment in Europe, which ended in December.

“I feel that I was saved,” she said in excerpts from an interview to be broadcast on Britain’s Sky One television on Sunday, and published in British newspapers today. Read more..

Pregnancy and hair loss

I’ve reached that stage in my life where every time I see a baby I go a little crazy and start to speak in a weird baby language which makes no sense to the baby.

Due to this weird and strange thing, I think it’s called being broody, I’ve met alot mums who have explained to me how there hair started to thin after having a baby. To be honest I think it’s one of the most common side effects I’ve been told about when a women has had a baby. Another side effect I’ve heard of is called..Forever skint and slightly stressed…Lol! Unfortunately this hasn’t rid me of my broodiness…

Hair Growth Changes During Pregnancy

When a woman becomes pregnant her body begins to undergo some very significant hormonal changes. One of the changes, an increase in estrogen production, can affect the natural hair growth cycle. Increased levels of estrogens during pregnancy cause some hair follicles to shift into the anagen (growth) phase of the cycle so an above average number of follicles are producing hair during this time. The increased estrogens will also inhibit some follicles that are in the catagen (shedding) phase so less hair is lost during this time.

Because of these changes to the hair growth cycle many pregnant women report experiencing a boost in hair thickness, hair volume, hair length, and general hair feel. However, this exciting period of hair growth is short-lived as the positive changes are replaced with somewhat negative ones after childbirth. Read more…

Thyroid disease and hair loss.

Starting to lose your hair can be worrying enough on its own, but sometimes it’s a sign of other health problems. Hair which thins evenly across the head, especially if it is accompanied by unexplained tiredness, weight changes and thinning of the outer edges of the eyebrows, can be a sign of thyroid problems. If you suspect this may be happening to you, your doctor can help – but what do you need to know to look after your hair?

How Thyroid Problems Cause Hair Loss

The easiest way to understand what your thyroid does is to see it as a sort of regulator controlling the pace of your metabolism. Sometimes the thyroid can stop working as hard as it should, or it can become overactive, either of which can cause problems. This can be triggered by other health conditions or it can happen spontaneously. It can happen at any age.

Because hair follicles normally work very hard and require a lot of energy, they can quickly start to suffer if your body doesn’t have enough energy because your metabolism has slowed down. The hormonal changes that occur when the thyroid is overactive can also cause problems. Often people find that their hair becomes dry and rough, or that it clumps together more and tangles easily. The good news is that it almost never falls out completely and changes are usually reversible. Read more..

Celebs who may suffer from Alopecia

Alopecia what you need to know..

Troubled TV presenter Gail Porter has lost almost all her trademark blonde hair as a result of the condition alopecia areata. Gail, who has said she is ‘bald but not afraid’, said last week that she lost most of her hair overnight while she was in Los Angeles a month ago.

Here, we call on the experts to explain a condition that affects around one in 100 people in the UK, but is still poorly understood:

What is alopecia?

Alopecia, which causes baldness, is thought to be an auto-immune disorder, with the immune system -the body’s defence system – turning on itself.

Celebrities Women Who Wear Wigs – Is it for fashion or hair loss ?

I stumbled across something online today that said that Tina Turner actually suffers with alopecia universalis. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, as many African American women wear wigs and hair weaves. Most often I think it is for style, but who knows this could be why I have never actually have seen a picture of her without her wig. She always looks so fabulous, the wigs just add to her beauty. Diets and Hair loss!

This has really made me be or at least think more carefully about what I eat. As I’ve mentioned before I have thinning hair at my temples and have wondered when it would start to thicken out again as I haven’t had my hair braided in over 2 years.

Now I’m going to watch what I eat as I do tend to stuff my face with chocolates and crisips. Which is has increased since I quit smoking…

As we are learning there are many reasons people start losing hair and these can range from stress to heredity to illnesses. One factor that many people don’t even realise can affect hair health is diet.

There are a variety of vitamins and minerals that should be included in your daily diet in order to reduce the loss of hair. When your diet is lacking in proper nutrition, or when you make drastic changes to your current diet, hair loss can result.

Extreme Diets

While simply not having enough of a certain vitamin in your diet can certainly contribute to hair loss, extreme dieting is the number one cause of diet related hair loss. Diets that are considered extreme are typically those that are also known as “fad diets.” This includes any drastic change in the way a person eats in order to achieve nearly instant results. Why you should avoid stress.

We all have those times when we feel that the world is caving in on us and everyday feels like a year. It would seem that continuous stress on the body can lead to hair loss..

Hair loss due to emotional stress

One of the reasons for the recent hair loss problem may be due to stress and they mostly are related. Hair loss really a side effect of too much and intensive bodily or emotional Stress. When people are going through a worrying event or period, they may start to notice that their hair starts to thin and eventually hair loss can take place. In such circumstances, the hair follicles often stop growing too early when the body system wrongly treats the hair follicles as foreign tissues, thus resulting in thinning of hair and ultimately dropping out. Reason 9 for hair loss…

Having an infection is another cause of hair loss.

One type of infection is ringworms that infects the scalp. This unsightly and uncomfortable reason for hair loss is a form of scalp infection. However ringworm, despite the name, is a skin infection and has nothing to do with worms. It’s caused by fungus, a bit like athletes foot.  This type of infection mainly effects children and can be transeferd  by way of contact with animals (eg dogs, cats. hamsters etc).

As it’s a fungal infection this can be treated with anti fungul medication to clear it up.

What are the symptoms of scalp ringworm?

  • Commonly, the infection just looks like severe dandruff on various places on the scalp. This may be mistaken for psoriasis.
  • Some infections cause patches of hair loss (bald patches) to develop. The bald patches are usually inflamed and very scaly. Small broken-off hairs may remain scattered in the bald patches.
  • In some cases several painful pustules (boils) develop on the scalp.
  • A more severe infection develops in a small number of cases. This causes a large ‘boggy’ swelling in a section of the scalp, called a kerion. This can be oozing and tender and, if not treated early, can cause permanent scarring and hair loss.
  • If you have a severe infection, such as a kerion or pustules, you may develop a fever and the glands in the neck may swell. Read more about this….

Honest to betsy I didn’t know you could get an infection which could cause hair loss. I can’t wait for the 8th reason…..

Why do people suffer from hair loss?

Thinking about having my hair cut really short or close to the scalp made me start to think about women and men who don’t have that option.

Losing your hair is something that can really knock your confidence. When people don’t understand why or know why it is not something that you’re going to enlighten them on. So wigs aren’t just a fashion statement but for some a real necessary…

Over the next few days….OK 10, I’ll be going through the main reasons that people suffer from hair loss.

Reason 10

In most cases the hormone DHT damages hair follicle which causes hair loss.

This is naturally present in men and those who go bald do so because of both the hormone and their genes. In women, hormonal fluctuations could lead to lower than normal estrogen levels. Estrogen is supposed to balance and regulate DHT. With less estrogen, DHT has a stronger effect.

DHT stands for Dihydrotestosterone (Die-hi-dro-tes-tos-ter-ron) an active metabolite and also a by product of the male sex hormone Testosterone. Metabolites are compounds that are crucial for normal growth, physical development and reproduction. Read more..

Starlets going baldly where no one else has gone before!?

I’ve considered and am still considering cutting my hair really short.

This is something that I’ve been considering doing for a long time as my cousin cuts hers hair short on a regular basis and it works for her. Personally I think really really short hair would be great as I wouldn’t need to do anything except wash and dry it.

Plus as I wear nothing but a wig if it didn’t suit me then no one would be the wiser as my head always has a wig on it.

It would seem that this isn’t some new thing as celebs men and more importantly women have already been chopping off there locks…

Celebs Gone Bald: Starlets Embrace Hair Trend

While American men spend huge amounts of their hard-earned money in the often-futile quest of preventing baldness, some famous female celebrities are breaking out the razors and going either fully or partially bald. Read more of this story…

Real Hair Wigs

I’m a big fan of human hair wigs and they are always my wig of choice. Why? Well they last longer than synthetic fibres and I find them easier to maintain as well. However they do cost more than synthetic wigs but I’m also a big believer that you get what you pay for.

Even though I’m a fan of human hair wigs I’ve never really asked where the hair comes from. I have a Lace wig which is made from Indian Hair and a machine made wig that uses Chinese Hair.

I really didn’t realise that the wig industry is so huge!

In 2002 India exported $44,550,280 of worked human hair which, in todays money, is £27,130,926 and China imported $62,621,864 which would be £38,136,163. Well the world”s most expensive car only, yes I say ONLY, cost $1.25m. To break it down even more….That is loads of money!

India is one of the, if not THE, biggest exporter of human hair! I recently watched a movie by Chris Rock  called “Good Hair”  where he goes to India to see how the hair is collected.

Indian Temples Do Brisk Business in Women’s Hair

NEW DELHI, India (WOMENSENEWS)—when Nafisa Ali, a Bollywood actor and Miss India 1976, shaved her hair, she wasn’t trying to make a style statement.

She offered her waist-length locks at the 1,200-year-old Sri Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, a town in Chittor district of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, to thank its deity for granting her a private wish she had made on behalf of her family that had given her life new meaning. The tradition of offering hair is a symbol of religious devotion and surrender of the ego. Read more of this story…

Then when the hair is bought is can be made into a hair extension or made into a wig.

The handmade Lace Wigs that I sell are made overseas as it is expensive having them made in the UK, however there are some places in the UK that do make handmade wigs.

The story behind Real Hair Wigs..

Despite the trend for synthetic wigs, there is still a demand for real hair wigs and the art of real-hair wig making is a highly skilled art form. We visited the Banbury Postiche factory in Oxfordshire to see how it’s done.

Nick Allen, sales director, says, ”Although our business mostly supplies acrylic wigs, some customers will pay extra for real hair wigs which are made by hand on the premises.” Read more of this story..

Wigs really are a fashion statement!

Ok so I’ve been bleating on about how fashionable wigs are. However do you think that they are a fashion statement? Do hip pop stars wear them? Sorry but the answer is gonna have to be a yes..

Charlie Le Mindu Debuts at LFW

Forget tasteful bobs and pretty fringes, the Charlie Le Mindu hair show at London Fashion Week pulled out all the stops to shock and delight the jam-packed audience of hipsters.

Drag Queen Jodie Harsh, known for her love of big hair, sat happily in the front row with her Leigh Bowery look-a-like friend and was seen mouthing the words “fab” as soon as the first model took to the stage. Balancing a giant red square of hair on her head, this Toyahesque, avant garde style started the show perfectly. Read more of this story..

Why do you wear a wig?

I went out with my brother and nephew for a meal and while we were talking my nephew suddenly asked if I was bald and was that why I’d started wearing wigs.

My nephew is only 13 and I have been wearing wigs for about 2 years plus I lived in a different part of the country for the last 10 years so he didn’t see me often. This did make me think of men and women who wear wigs for reasons due to hair loss.

For 10 years I’ve had plaited extensions in my hair which, due to their tightness, has caused damage to my hair line at the temples. The hair there is very weak and a lot thinner than on the rest of my head. When I was younger I always had my hair in a tight ponytail which can up root hair strands. In some severe cases, the scalp injury could develop scar tissue which would make it difficult for the hair to re-grow. That is one of the reasons I wear a wig. The other is that wigs allow you to look fantastic with little effort and in the minimum amount of time.

No sitting for hours in the hairdressers for me!

Andre Agassi admits to wearing a wig!?

Andre Agassi has a secret, and he’s sharing: The tennis star has worn hair pieces for years! Not just subtle, low-key ones, but full-on ’80s rockstar hair, mullets and more.

While it makes perfect sense — in fact old photos scream fake hair when we look back — we still felt a bit shocked by the now-bald star’s admission, which he made via his upcoming book, “Open: An Autobiography.” Read more of this story….

This really did surprise me as I never would have considered Andre Agassi wearing a wig.  Plus the fact that he wore it while playing tennis is absolutely fantastic:

The thing about wearing a wig is that if it looks natural no one will ever think it’s a wig. Believe it or not but Andre Agassi’s wig was in the style of the times so it looked natural and no one questioned it.

That is exactly the same now. If you wear a well styled wig, like the ones that I wear and sell, then unless you tell someone people on the street will never know it’s a wig.

Exercise and wigs

Do you think these two go together?

I’m guessing, gee I do a lot of that sometimes, that if you’ve never worn a wig before you would think that exercise is the last thing you would want to do while wearing one.

To be honest I had those thoughts myself when  I started wearing wigs. However the two can coincide very well together. I normally wear a Lace Wig and as that is attached using liquid adhesive or double sided tape that wig is going no where. Absolutely no where….

As I’m currently wearing a standard wig called Platinum, see photo in my last blog entry, this is machine wefted with adjustable straps in the back. Now you would think that this wig wouldn’t be as secure as the Lace wig…Well think again.

I’ve been jogging in this wig and it’s been fine. I pulled it back into a low ponytail and off I went with no problem at all. Then last week I really put it to the test as I went Pole Dancing. Yep that’s right dancing up and down a pole. Well I wasn’t actually dancing up and down the pole I was pulling myself up and falling off the pole. Anyhow,it was more vigorous exercise than I thought it could ever be but the wig stayed firmly attached to my head with no one there even considering that my hair might not be my own.

I’ll be back to falling off the pole this Thursday and I’ll try and take a picture so that you can see what I mean. The things I do in the name of blog entries! Well someone’s gotta do it..
