So there I was strolling through Manchester City and I glanced at a lady, who aside from being rather tall and stood out from the crowd, was wearing a wig which just sat on her head.

Then I took really good look at her face and realised that it was a man.
Now you may think, as some of my family and friends did, that it was a dare or a joke. I saw the look on this guy’s face and it wasn’t the look of someone doing this for a joke. He looked nervous and determined all at once.
It took my brain a couple of minutes to process that it was man, by which time he’d walked down the street but then did a u-turn and came right back passed me.
That’s when I really looked at his face. He looked like he was going to be ill and was sort of hyperventilating. Thinking about it, to walk around a busy city centre on a Saturday afternoon, takes courage and determination.
From what I’ve read about transgender, you live the life a women/man for a period of time before you have the operation so that you have time to assess if this is the right decision for you. That’s what I thought was what was happening as he was very much man looking and walking. Plus seeing people look, laugh and point didn’t sit well with me. Rather than being understanding or asking themselves what else could this mean, people were more comfortable ridiculing what they didn’t understand.
I watched Tears, Tiaras and Transsexuals ,which aired on Channel 4 last year and found it fascinating. You get a really good insight of how brave you have to be to follow your dreams. Plus some of the women look absolutely gorgeous!
Talking of gorgeous there was also Isis who competed in America’s Top Model who looks fantastic.
So what did I do…. Well I ran after him and gave him by business card. The synthetic wig he was wearing could have been loads better and more subtle and I know that the wigs I sell are of a much superior quality, as I wear them myself! If I’d let him go without giving him my card I wouldn’t have slept and it would have played on my mind.

Well from the what I’ve seen of Lily Allen she loves her wigs as much as I do. However I like mine to be a little more subtle than some of the ones that Lily likes to wear. Then again if I was into show business I’d be a little more in your face with it.
The one wig that Lily Allen wore was the long blond one which looked really good on her. I’d always thought that dark hair suited her best but then she rocked out looking foxy in the long blond number.

Katie Price and her love of wigs.

I’d had a long day and decided that I wanted my brain to relax so I switched on the TV, channel hopped for a while and then settles on “What Katie did next” on ITV2. Now I’m not a big fan of Katie Price but I do admire what she has done in her life with regards to where she started off and where she is today.
Anyhow, she was getting ready to head off to the Brit Awards and her make up/hair stylist pulls a wig out of the bag and Katie Price explains that she wears a wig now and again. I did surely sit up in my seat and take notice. She didn’t let the camera’s film her putting it on but I think it may have been a 3/4 wig where you blend your own hair into the wig.
Don’t get me wrong I knew she wore hair extensions, however, I’m well chuffed that she wears wigs as well.
Some people still think that if you wear a wig you must be bald…One day I’ll post a picture of myself with my natural hair, it’s a sight to be seen.
After the programme I went hunting for a picture of Katie Price wearing a wig and could only find an article with her wearing a shockingly obvious wig. Her partner, Alex, is wearing an even more shocking outfit…
How to attach a Lace Front/Full Lace Wig PT:2
Now we come to the cutting of the wig itself. I was told to cut the lace back, please see photo of mannequin with Full Lace Wig, and to leave about 2cm of lace around the edge. By leaving that lace around the edge everyone can see it even if it is Swiss Lace. As you are paying £150+ for this lace technology which is meant to be virtually undetectable then why show everyone the lace?

A really good tip is that when you are cutting the lace around the hair line of the wig only cut a 1-2cm with each snip. This is so that you don’t do what I did and cut loads of lace off in one go then realise that you had cut too much. When you cut a little at a time you have time enough to see if you have made any mistakes. Plus you’re not left with a £200 Lace Wig that now does not fit your head……Hey I make the mistakes so that you don’t have to.
Anyhow as you will see from the photo below I was in shock at how amazingly awful I looked……I’ve never shown anyone this photo before and I’m guessing you can see why.

My own attempt at attaching a Lace Wig

Anyone can attach a Lace Wig as all it takes is practice, patience and determination. You’ll need these qualities if you are attaching a Full Lace Wig as the back is slightly tricky when you’re doing it by yourself and using a mirror. As it is the back of the head if you do make a mistake no one is going to see. It took me a good few attempts to work out how much adhesive to put on in that area. I found that, for me, I needed to put on more there than on the rest of my head.
It all depends on your own body chemistry how much glue to put on. All I can say is that trail and error is the key to success.
Then again if you don’t have that then seek out a good professional.

Reason 9 for hair loss…
Having an infection is another cause of hair loss.
One type of infection is ringworms that infects the scalp. This unsightly and uncomfortable reason for hair loss is a form of scalp infection.However ringworm, despite the name, is a skin infection and has nothing to do with worms. It’s caused by fungus, a bit like athletes foot. This type of infection mainly effects children and can be transeferd by way of contact with animals (eg dogs, cats. hamsters etc).
As it’s a fungal infection this can be treated with anti fungul medication to clear it up.
What are the symptoms of scalp ringworm?
- Commonly, the infection just looks like severe dandruff on various places on the scalp. This may be mistaken for psoriasis.
- Some infections cause patches of hair loss (bald patches) to develop. The bald patches are usually inflamed and very scaly. Small broken-off hairs may remain scattered in the bald patches.
- In some cases several painful pustules (boils) develop on the scalp.
- A more severe infection develops in a small number of cases. This causes a large ‘boggy’ swelling in a section of the scalp, called a kerion. This can be oozing and tender and, if not treated early, can cause permanent scarring and hair loss.
- If you have a severe infection, such as a kerion or pustules, you may develop a fever and the glands in the neck may swell. Read more about this….

I’ve considered and am still considering cutting my hair really short.
This is something that I’ve been considering doing for a long time as my cousin cuts hers hair short on a regular basis and it works for her. Personally I think really really short hair would be great as I wouldn’t need to do anything except wash and dry it.
Plus as I wear nothing but a wig if it didn’t suit me then no one would be the wiser as my head always has a wig on it.
It would seem that this isn’t some new thing as celebs men and more importantly women have already been chopping off there locks…

Secretly Balding Moviestars
I realise that it’s not just women that wear wigs but men as well. There is a whole raft of famous men who allegedly wear them and I have to say that I’d never have guessed.
I never knew that Brendan Fraser, out of The Mummy, was losing his hair and that he wore a hair piece. Well that shows me.
So then, as I’m forever curious, I started wondering who else wears a hair piece.
Sean Connery wore a hair piece all through his career as James Bond. I’m flabbergasted that it would seem that Ben Affleck is alleged to wear a hair piece. The list is quite long.
It’s amazing how good the technology is and has been, in the case of Sean Connery, that it is hard to distinguish a wig from natural hair unless it’s pointed out to you or someone tells you.
This once again blows away that myth that wigs are easily distinguishable. Actually the only wigs that I am able to spot are the ones that are poorly made. I have never had anyone stop me in the street, or anywhere else, and say ” Nice wig love”.
I do have a lot of people comment on how nice my hair looks and I don’t spend half as much as the celebrities do.
How do you care for your wig?
I was asked this week “How do you wash your wig?”. I’m asked this question a lot so I thought other people must wonder about this as well.
Well there really isn’t any smoke and mirrors with this. If it’s a synthetic fibre wig I would do the following:
- Fill the fill with cool water and add some mild shampoo and conditioner.
- DO NOT scrub the wig just swish it around in the water from side to side and up and down.
- Rinse out the shampoo and add a little conditioner as this will help de-tangle the wig.
- Rinse out the shampoo and squeeze out excess water remembering to be gentle.
- I hang my wig on the towel rail, which is switched off, to dry drip dry
For human hair wigs I would do the same apart from using warm water. If you use warm or hot water with synthetic wigs the fibre goes a bit weird and doesn’t look right so the wig doesn’t last as long.
I personally use a sheen spray to keep the wig looking fresh and perky….OK looking good. Sheen spray also helps to keep the tangles at bay. With synthetic wigs you really only should use a little. Why? Well I used loads once and a few people commented on how shiny my hair was. I took it as “Oooo look how greasy your hair looks..” Too much and you may as well wash it out. Trust me less is more!
However with Human Hair wigs you don’t have to worry about that as it seems to sink in really well into the hair. Plus as you can use tongs and flat irons on the wig it’s used up protecting the hair from the heat as well as keeping the tangles at bay.

I was asked this question when I gave a presentation to the student hairdresser at my local college. There are some celebrities that do wear wigs but I was sure that Cheryl Cole was not one of them.
When I watch the L’Oreal advert and see the poster of Cheryl Cole on billboards and bus stops I’d guessed that she was wearing some sort of hair extensions as I remember that her hair was not as full as it is now. Then I came across this article about Cheryl Cole and her hair.
Just like a wig hair extensions can also give you a new look. I really like Cheryl Cole as she seems to be quite down to earth even though she’s super famous.
Talking about super famous. Beyonce is super super super famous and it would seem that she wears a wig.

Lady Gaga…Is that a..
I’m not sure if you know that Lady Gaga wears a wig. If you knew that, have you seen her without the white wig that she favours and is her signature look. Well this is Lady Gaga without the wig
There are a few photo’s and I’ve looked at all of them and see that she had the quirky image from the stat. Who else is going to wear some of that get up (bra with chains from it..) aside from Madonna and it certainly is not Madonna.
Well I’m not alone…as in not the only person who wears a wig and is more than happy for people to know about it. It’s funny though that it’s alleged that after she started wearing her wig her career took off.
Now that is a fantastic advert for wearing wigs. If people ask me what I do for a living I always tell them that I sell wigs on line. When I tell them that I’m wearing one they always say “Ohmygoodness! I couldn’t tell that was a wig. It looks so natural”. Mmmm that’s why I wear them….
Who wants someone to say “Excuse me but you’re wig looks nice”…I always have people saying “Your hair looks so nice, I wish I had hair like you”. Then I tell them that they can.
Wig wearing is soooo much fun!
So what goes on under the wig?
That’s a question I’m asked about all the time.
If you have European hair then I would suggest that you wrap your hair around your head. When I say “wrap” I mean that you brush/comb your hair around your head so that it’s flat then put on your wig cap. You may need some help with this but practice does make perfect.
If you have unruly or big hair then I would suggest that you plait your hair close to your head or as close as you can get it. Then put on the wig cap will flatten your hair however if you do not have hair then you may not need one.

There isn’t much variety in colours with stocking caps.
If you wanted to you could recycle an old pair of tights/stockings that you may have as they will be closer to your skin tone. This is especially helpful if you are wearing a Lace Wig (I’ll get onto that topic at a later date). You can make many caps just from one pair of tights/stockings. All you would do is:
- Cut the leg section at the widest part of the tights/stockings
- That is a wig cap as the cap is in the desired width and all you now need to is tack in some stitches to seal the cap.
There you go a cost effective wig cap ready to go.
How do wigs work?
So I had a moment of madness and volunteered to give a presentation on wigs at one of the local colleges where I live. After many weeks of procrastination I finally had my final draft of what I wanted to say.
From the feedback I received I found that the student hairdressers realised that wigs are a viable option and not a dull ugly and obvious thingsas they thought before.
Plus the fact that I wear what I sell makes me a great advertisement for wig wearing.
My story of wig wearing came about from a need to be able to look good with as little effort as possible. Any many of my friends can tell you I would rather do anything else than have to fiddle with my hair if I can.
I realised the other day that I’ve been wearing wigs for over 2 years now and I don’t know what I did before that time. Well actually I do and here are some photo’s to show you the results of not knowing how fantastic wigs are.

Another thing that people say or I can see the thoughts running through their heads is “How do wigs work”. There really is no hocus pocus with wigs. They are quite straight forward as shown in the photo’s below.
Breathable cap to allow air to flow freely.
This photo shows the cap construction which is what is called “machines wefted”. This is breathable cap which lets the air flow freely so your head does not get hot. At the bottom of the wig (where the label is in the photo) there are adjustable straps which you can tighten or loosen for additional security if needed.

As you can see from the photo above the part of the wig you can see where the machine wefts then meet a lace base. This lace base is where the skin top will show on the wig. The photo below is a close up of the parting on the wig.

This is how the wig looks. This is a human hair wig and looks absolutely fantastic and with human hair wigs you can use flat irons and tongs.
